  • Diabetes: A day in the life…

Outwardly, people with diabetes make living with diabetes seem like nothing. We totally got this. Many people who are unfamiliar with diabetes think that all we have to do is occasionally test our blood sugars and have our injections or tablets. These people don’t get it, nor will they ever come close to understanding what Read more

  • Mobile Health Apps – Friend or Foe

A simple browse on any app store for health related apps will leave you overwhelmed. In 2013, there were over 31,000 health, medical and fitness apps available, according to mHealth Watch. I have to admit that I am a sucker for bright, fun and easy to use apps. However, I don’t just mindlessly use health and Read more

  • R U OK? – Ask, Listen, Encourage, Follow-up

R U OK? is a not-for profit organisation who work towards connecting people together to protect people from suicide. With research suggesting that one of the main factors that increase suicide risk is a lack of feeling connected to others, this campaign aims to encourage people to start that conversation by taking time to ask Read more

  • Giving Thanks

At the recent Australian Diabetes Society / Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADS/ADEA) Annual Scientific Meeting, I ran into one of my first endocrinologists. He was my doctor back in the day before I knew much about healthcare and even before I met another person with diabetes. I wasn’t sure why I was so surprised to Read more

  • Consumer Outreach Program- ADS/ADEA 2014

Over the two main days of the Australian Diabetes Society and Australian Diabetes Educators Association, I was sick. My body loves timing these things well and over this week, I finally conceded defeat and took time off for the first time in a long while. Although that meant missing most of the conference, I was still Read more

  • Roche Educators Day – ADS/ADEA 2014

Roche have done something rather unconventional this year by inviting non-health professionals to speak at their educators day prior to the Australian Diabetes Society and Australian Diabetes Educators Association Annual Scientific Meeting. This was how fellow Young Leader in Diabetes, Steph and I managed to find ourselves behind a lectern speaking about diabetes and social Read more

Welcome to my Bittersweet Diagnosis Blog

When I started this blog in 2011, I never thought it would be going over 10 years later. Writing is my way of reflecting and processing the world around me. Over time, I didn’t realise my stories resonated with others or helped them to learn more about living with diabetes. And so it is the power of sharing stories that keeps me going with this blog.

Initially, I named my blog “Bittersweet Diagnosis” as that is exactly how I feel about my diabetes. Learning to live with a chronic condition as intensive as diabetes has been one of the toughest challenges I’m still navigating. Yet along the way, diabetes has made me grow and develop into a better person, physically and mentally.
